Stalcup School of Theology for the Laity at Brite Divinity School Presents:
Beyond The Marriage Wars: Sex, The Bible and Christian Ethics

Saturday, September 8 (9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.)
Northway Christian Church
7202 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, TX

Jennifer Wright Knust, Associate Professor
New Testament and Christian Origins
Boston University

The Bible has once again become a political football as pastors and pundits, purporting to defend both the Bible and American morals, seek to enforce what they understand to be God's version of marriage. But, as even a quick perusal of the biblical books can demonstrate, the Bible simply does not offer a consistent message about either marriage or sexual morals. To pretend that it does places faithful Christians in the false position of having to choose between Godís love and "what the Bible says." Taking the diversity of the biblical witness seriously, this seminar seeks another way forward, one that honors the proposition that God intends love, not hate, and justice, not self-righteousness.

Jennifer Wright Knust teaches courses on Jesus, the Gospels and the history of the Christian Bible, among other topics at Boston University. Her recently published book, Unprotected Texts: The Bible's Surprising Contradictions about Sex and Desire (2011) was chosen as one of Huffington Post's Top Twelve Books in Religion.
